PROJECT DETAILS:

The client, Suzanne Smith, has many years of hands-on experience in teaching indigenous people how to set-up and maintain banking and accounting systems in Third World cultures in the Sub-Saharan regions of Africa. Financial aid from the U.S. and other countries flows into these remote locations that often do not have reliable electricity and little technology. As local, small, startup companies receive micro-loans to help launch the local economy, accurate tracking and reporting is required. Suzanne teaches a handwritten double-data entry system that is simple to learn and use.

Our challenge was to represent a no-tech solution to the logo design. We choose to employ the universal accounting system of the abacus, also called a “counting frame”. The abacus is a calculator tool employed before the written Arabic numerical system was adopted. It is still in use today in many parts of the world to teach basic arithmetic to children.
